Pope Francis
Pope Francis (who took his name from St. Francis of Assisi) and his recent address during his 2024 visit to Singapore.
Inclusivity vs. Exclusivity: Traditionally, the Church has taught Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus (”Outside the Church there is no salvation”). This statement by Francis leans much closer to Universalism or Pluralism, suggesting that the Divine is accessible regardless of the specific “language” or dogma one uses.
The “Language” Metaphor: By comparing religions to languages, he’s suggesting that while the “grammar” (rituals/laws) might differ, the “meaning” (God/Love) is the same.
Theological Pushback: Predictably, this has ruffled feathers among traditionalists who argue it contradicts the unique salvific role of Jesus. However, for those in the deconstruction space, it’s seen as a refreshing move toward a more global, humble theology.
